Are You Playing It Safe In Your PT Business?
Are you playing it safe in your PT business by doing any of these things?
- Opting for the safe price
- Opting for the safe strategies
- Opting for the safe approach
- Opting to save rather than invest?
- Choosing to keep things low key
- Choosing to take part in conversations with your colleagues, comparing struggles and frustrations and complaining about how hard it all is to make ends meet.
One of the keys to effectively promoting your business and attracting the kind of clients you want is this –
Get Excited and Passionate about what you do.
The most successful fitness professionals are doing well because they are passionate about what they do. By passionate I mean they are committed to results, passionate about finding and sharing solutions, and they are fanatical about spreading the word far and wide.
I remember the first time a personal trainer called me borderline obsessive and fanatical – it was during a six week marketing campaign where I was promoting my first PT Business Boot Camp Weekend and I was promoting it every which way I could because I knew the difference my event would make to the PTs who came along and heard the business secrets I wanted to share. So being called obsessive was delightful! I thought “Yes, I know” because it’s true. I am fanatical and passionate about what I do and it’s what has pushed me to do things I otherwise wouldn’t have done.
If I questioned 10 of your friends and colleagues, how would they describe you? Would they tell me that you are passionate, maybe even fanatical about what you do and about making a difference?
I know lots of personal trainers love doing what they do, are passionate about fitness and so on but this rarely comes through. More often they come across as timid and unsure. When they speak about their business there’s no enthusiasm or excitement. It’s all very dry and boring and about as inspiring as a wet sponge.
If you want to attract more clients to your business I’ll tell you something for nothing, there is nothing more contagious than a person with authentic fire and passion in their belly. Expressing genuine passion and excitement is far more contagious than being a know-it-all or a clever marketing campaign or even a cool and stunning website.
Yet very few business owners ever focus on or even think about this. Some may strive to learn everything they can about marketing, others will focus on trying to perfect their marketing materials and strategies. But few dare to step out of the crowd and declare and communicate their passion for their business.
So often I hear PTs telling me how difficult they find marketing but if you add this ingredient you will find that your marketing happens easily. If you express authentic excitement about your business it will come through in your website, and your writing and your conversations.
You might be thinking “Look Yvette, that’s just not my style to be all excited and passionate”, or you might not be feeling that way about your business yet. You may not have developed that kind of relationship with your business yet. You might be concerned about putting people off if you are too passionate about what you do. Better to be “cool” and play it safe.
First of all, if you aren’t feeling excited about your business, then it means one of two things. Either you are in the wrong business or else, and more likely, you just have some work to do to reach a point where you can get excited. This is stuff I do with my clients all the time and I’ve yet to meet someone who didn’t discover their passion for their business.
Second of all, if you believe that playing it safe and playing down your passion and excitement is good for your business then think again. Your concern with yourself has taken over your desire to make a difference, to reach and to serve your clients. Playing it safe stifles you and your business and is shortening the life of your business.
Think about it for a moment…where are you playing it safe? Where are you opting for the safe choice?
Now ask yourself “What would happen to my business if I stopped playing it safe?”
Ask yourself “What breakthroughs might happen in my business if I allowed myself to express my excitement and my passion for what I do?”
List everything you are excited about and passionate about in your business and in what you do. Think about how it feels and think about how you would feel if you were doing more of what you care about?
The PT Business Gym Challenge…
Find at least one opportunity to express your genuine passion for your business. It might be the next time you have a conversation with a prospective client or the next time you are talking to a friend or colleague about what you do. Go on, I dare you and let me know the response you get.
Until next time…
Yvette
